Lake Vyrnwy

View From Lake Vrynwy

Just 45 minutes from Seven Oaks, the majestic Lake Vyrnwy sits proudly on the cusp of Snowdonia National Park and is one of the top places to visit in Wales.

Despite its name, Lake Vyrnwy isn’t a lake at all but a reservoir that was created as a way to supply water to Liverpool in the late 1800s. During the creation of Lake Vyrnwy, an old village was submerged under the water including a church, farmhouses and even a post office. Visitors can hardly believe that an entire village sits calmly under the magnificent breadth of still water.

The Location

Don’t let the fact that it’s manmade put you off; Lake Vyrnwy is such a beautiful location it’s unimaginable that it didn’t occur naturally. Surrounding the reservoir are hundreds of brooks and waterfalls to explore, including the famous Rhiwargor waterfall. But the area isn’t just for ramblers, the views of the lake itself push this spectacular area to the top of sightseeing bucket lists.

Stargazing

The lake is cloaked by dramatic mountains and an enchanted forest, paired with the mythical gothic tower and imposing dam, the area really feels like a fairy tale scene. Lake Vyrnwy is also one of the best stargazing locations in the UK due to its very little light pollution, adding in further magic to an already enchanting place.

Activities

After a morning basking in the beauty of the reservoir, there are plenty of activities to get your walking boots stuck into – from boating to fly fishing, and even clay pigeon shooting. Cycle hire is also available here, and the cycle trail surrounding the lake is 12 miles of ancient woodland, but if you would prefer to explore the woodlands on foot there are 6 trails that will take you through the forests that date back to the ice age.
